"Couldn't make stderr distinct from stdout" error with MS TerminalServer

1) I get this message whenever I run an app that is compiled against cygwin,
like ls, gcc, which, etc.
2) On W2k through terminal services(telnet, not web admin).  I'm not sure what
application/remote admin mode means.
