Signal 127

I am running at Win32 API program that copies tapes.  At the end of a
tape file I get a "Signal 127" message.  Under some conditions, it
doesn't seem to cause a problem.  In Win2k with an AIT2 drive, the drive
hangs.  Any ideas?
