login to bash

Hi,

I switched OS from 98 to win2k and cannot get the "login" to the bash
shell working. Also the "su" won't do its work.

Cygwin was installed from the internet using the setup tool supplied.
My win2k login is "merkosh". When I start Cygwin I land in
/home/merkosh. I imported the group and passwd settings with "mkgroup
-l >group" and "mkpasswd -l >passwd":

merkosh@M111 /etc
$ cat group
Everyone:S-1-1-0:0:
SYSTEM:S-1-5-18:18:
None:S-1-5-21-1644491937-813497703-1957994488-513:513:
Administrators:S-1-5-32-544:544:
Backup Operators:S-1-5-32-551:551:
Guests:S-1-5-32-546:546:
Power Users:S-1-5-32-547:547:
Replicator:S-1-5-32-552:552:
Users:S-1-5-32-545:545:

merkosh@M111 /etc
$ cat passwd
Everyone:*:0:0:,S-1-1-0::
SYSTEM:*:18:18:,S-1-5-18::
Administrators:*:544:544:,S-1-5-32-544::
Administrator::500:513:,S-1-5-21-1644491937-813497703-1957994488-500:/home/Administrator:/bin/sh
Guest::501:513:,S-1-5-21-1644491937-813497703-1957994488-501:/home/Guest:/bin/sh
merkosh::1000:513:Uwe Mayer,S-1-5-21-1644491937-813497703-1957994488-1000:/home/merkosh:/bin/sh

In the mailing list history I found out I hat to "set CYGWIN=ntsec"
and now the file permissions can be set.
However "login" won't accept "merkosh" or "Administrator" to log in
with the NT5 passwords. I wanted it to replace the "bash -i --login"
line in cygwin.bat I use to start Cygwin. I get the error msg "incorrect login"
When I try "su merkosh" the PS1 string is misinterpreted and the
prompt turns into:

merkosh@M111 ~
$ su merkosh
\[\033]0;\w\007
\033[32m\]\u@\h \[\033[33m\w\033[0m\]
$

or:
merkosh@M111 ~
$ su Administrator
su: cannot set user id: Not owner

Also I am wondering... since when I run Setup.exe to install Cygwin
the "CYGWIN=ntsec" wasn't set then. I only set it recently when
browsing the mailing list threads. Shouldn't I have to reassign the
all file access permissions?

I hope somebody can give me an idea where to start to get all this
working.

Ciao
Uwe
