Bash/Emacs Problem

 This problem has nothing to do with make.
 Type M-x compile
 When prompted with  "Compile command: make -k " , enter any command
 "gcc -v", "ls", "DIR", whatever.
 All return the same error message, despite appearing to run successfully.
 My investigation continues.
