gdb and java

I'm trying to debug some gcj-compiled code, and finding that the
current gdb doesn't seem to support java code, at least to initial
appearances.  Can some knowledgable person please briefly explain the
difference between the source base from which the cygwin gdb source is
released and the HEAD branch of the binutils CVS space?
