OpenSSH crashes - able to repeat the cause

I've built a non-stripped version, but am still waiting for advice on
how to get gdb involved when the problem occurs -- I've tried various
hacks with inetd.conf and /usr/bin/id to get it involved, so far
without success -- suggestions welcomed.
