Significance of HOMEPATH and HOMEDIR variables?

When I first installed Cygwin a long time ago, I set two variables
called "HOMEPATH" and "HOMEDIR", in addition to the normal "HOME".
I'm not sure what those are for, or even if they are still necessary.
What are they for, and WHERE are they documented?
