Not finding hidden files in root directory

Hello
I just installed version 1.1.5-7; fresh install, nothing on the machine
before. Starting bash, it does not find hidden files (starting with .) in my
root directory. In any other directory, it works fine. When removing the
file '.afile', then no remark about any hidden file can be seen.
Following a short description of the situation. Does somebody has an idea
what I am doing wrong?
