Make fails -- "can't cd"

While using make to compile sources in
/usr/local/src/[unpackedsources], I get this message:

make all-recursive
Making all in lib
cd: can't cd to lib
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make: *** [all-recursive-am] Error 2

Similar "can't cd" errors occur while compiling other sources.

I've recently upgraded Cygwin and gcc (using Droolview) and
have had this trouble since then.  Prior to that
several tarballs worked without error.  I have searched
the FAQ, Deja and Cygwin mlist with no success.  Thanks for
