Pipe key <shift-backslash> doesnt work

I'm running Windows98SE and installed the latest release of cygwin.

With all releases of cygwin, I have found that my pipe key '|' doesn't work 
(shift-backslash) in bash. However, backslash works fine by itself.

I have tried typing pipe '|' in an MS-DOS box and it works fine.

Please can someone help me?
