MAKE_MODE changes

I'm not sure what behavior you are talking about in built natively.  I
would think that the behavior should be separate from what compiler you
used to build it.  Maybe I'm just being dense and missing something.

The version I have here is 3.77.  I think I remember a 3.78 recently?
