From cwcarlsonc@cox.net Thu Oct 2 03:53:00 2014 From: cwcarlsonc@cox.net (Chris Carlson) Date: Thu, 02 Oct 2014 03:53:00 -0000 Subject: Problem with Cygwin/X from remote Linux In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <542CCC31.5090303@cox.net> I've been using Cygwin on a Windows 7 laptop for a few years as an X server from my Fedora Linux system. I "ssh -X" to my Linux system and run various X programs (thunderbird, chrome, nautilus, etc.) with very few issues. Every now and then, I will upgrade Cygwin_64 just to get the latest changes. I hope that the few issues I have will be cleared up. I believe the one issue I have with Thunderbird may be Thunderbird, not Cygwin/X. Anyway, over the past weekend, I upgraded again. The upgrade seemed to go well. No surprises until... One of the things I've been doing is learning OpenGL. I'm converting a sample program that I acquired while working at SGI to OpenGL (it was written in gl, the original SGI graphics language). For the past few months, all of my OpenGL programs have worked fine over the network. Suddenly, with the latest version of Cygwin/X, it doesn't. Welcome to the XWin X Server Vendor: The Cygwin/X Project Release: 1.16.1.0 OS: CYGWIN_NT-6.1 grover 1.7.32(0.274/5/3) 2014-08-13 23:06 x86_64 OS: Windows 7 Service Pack 1 [Windows NT 6.1 build 7601] (Win64) Package: version 1.16.1-1 built 2014-09-29 XWin was started with the following command line: X :0 -multiwindow I discovered there are no visuals available to remote X connections that support OpenGL double buffering. There used to be, but no longer. There are visuals available to direct connections, but not for remote. I tried looking through the FAQ for answers, but I didn't see anything. Is this something that has intentionally changed? Where would I find it if it is (for future reference so I don't bug you)? Workarounds are to use either start Cygwin X server with -nowgl (so it too uses the software renderer and will offer a set of visual which is probably exactly the same), or to run the client with the LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT env var set (so that indirect rendering is used and the remote client has access to the actual set of visuals the server supports) I think the real fix to this is to fix the remote libGL, either so it matches visuals less precisely, or so it offers more visuals which can match, but this is not simple. > Believe it or not, I just so happen to have an XWin.0.log from my old, > old, old version of Cygwin. It was: > > Package: version 1.15.1-2 built 2014-05-06 Now I can reproduce this, it seems that this can be an unfortunate side-effect of the "Improve visual matching with a remote libGL by not reporting pbuffer size limits" change in 1.15.1-3 [1], which was intended to have the opposite effect, if previously no visuals at all were matching, so the software renderer was disabled, and we were falling back to indirect rendering. The browser is Seamonkey 2.29. It works fine for a while and then the _browser_ locks. It is definitely an X11 issue because this unlocked the browser: exit all xterms, exit the putty session, kill the X11 server. The browser didn't unlock until the last step. This lock up happened twice within half an hour. Now I can't reproduce it. That is the only system I have used recently that uses xterm instead of uxterm. The clipboard problems I have seen previously were all in the other direction, where clip going into an X11 application would fail. Unfortunately I didn't save the X server log file. Which, brings up another point. The X11 server is started by clicking on "start_server.bat" which contains: @echo off set CYGXTOP=%~dp0 C: chdir "%CYGXTOP%\bin" start Xwin :0 -multiwindow It always overwrites the Xwin.0.log file when it starts. Is there some change we could make to this .bat script that would cause it to at least save one previous version? There is supposed to be a 1 second timeout to ensure that we always respond to the Windows application in a timely fashion. (The issue here is that Windows clipboard pastes are synchronous (when the Windows application calls GetClipboardData(), it sends a WM_RENDERFORMAT to the clipboard owner, and blocks until that returns), but the X11 clipboard render is asynchronous (since we send a XConvertSelection() request to the clipboard owner and wait for a SelectionNotify event)) I've looked at this code again, and can't see anything wrong with they way this timeout is implemented. So, I'm afraid there's not a lot I can do without a repeatable reproduction or a log file. > That is the only system I have used recently that uses xterm instead of > uxterm. > > The clipboard problems I have seen previously were all in the other > direction, where clip going into an X11 application would fail. > > Unfortunately I didn't save the X server log file. I guess you could add to the above something like: move C:\cygwin\var\log\XWin.0.log C:\cygwin\var\log\XWin.0.log.old but yes, there is actually some code in the server to do that, but it's not turned on in XWin for unknown reasons... -- Jon TURNEY Volunteer Cygwin/X X Server maintainer -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From jon.turney@dronecode.org.uk Tue Oct 7 13:42:00 2014 From: jon.turney@dronecode.org.uk (Jon TURNEY) Date: Tue, 07 Oct 2014 13:42:00 -0000 Subject: Subject: Re: FW: Cygwin start menu / mirrors In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <5433EDCC.6090700@dronecode.org.uk> On 04/10/2014 18:16, t s wrote: > first of all, regarding the Cygwin setup program; the options are > install / re-install / un-install / default > > is it correct that to install only the latest updates, I would choose > the option 'default' ? I'm not sure what text you are looking at. The options for an individual package which is already installed are 'reinstall', 'uninstall', 'keep' and specific versions other than the currently installed one (if any). I can't see "default" anywhere. If you mean the default version, then yes, when "curr" is selected at the top, all packages which have updates, will be updated. > next question : if I delete the start menu option "Cygwin/x" and run > the setup program for option "default", it doesn't re-create the > start menu option "Cygwin/x" > > is this 'feature' acknowledged, and is it being addressed? The start menu link for for the X server is owned by the package xinit. If you reinstall that package, it should be recreated. I'm not sure what you are asking for here. If you were (for example) to delete /usr/bin/XWin.exe, are you expecting setup to reinstall that file, even though the package which owns it has no updates? While setup has many, many infelicities, I'm not sure this is one of them. Patches are always thoughtfully considered. -- Jon TURNEY Volunteer Cygwin/X X Server maintainer -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From jon.turney@dronecode.org.uk Tue Oct 7 13:50:00 2014 From: jon.turney@dronecode.org.uk (Jon TURNEY) Date: Tue, 07 Oct 2014 13:50:00 -0000 Subject: glwDrawingAreaWidgetClass In-Reply-To: <5433509B.8050805@cox.net> References: <5433509B.8050805@cox.net> Message-ID: <5433EF95.6050703@dronecode.org.uk> On 07/10/2014 03:31, Chris Carlson wrote: > I've discovered that the constant glwDrawingAreaWidgetClass is set to > 0. The current version of the setup program, 2.850 (64 bit), on the "select packages" screen, features a "default" option. That's the answer I was looking for. Thank you. I have a further question. Choosing menu item "Cygwin-X / X Win Server" boots X windows. If you right click on the 'X' icon in the lower right side of the screen, it features applications xterm / emacs / notepad / xload. Is it possible to tailor the list of applications referenced above? to include say xclock, xeyes And yet another question; I note the presence of a number of files in \usr\bin which start with 'gnome'. Does Cygwin/x feature gnome or kde as user interfaces? or does it only allow compilation of apps which use features of those interfaces? I have a fairly large program that I developed on Fedora Linux. It uses glwDrawingAreaClassRec to create a GL window. I attempted to compile and run it on Cygwin, and I got the failure. I added a print statement just before calling XtCreateManagedWidget() and discovered the value was 0 on Cygwin and an address on Linux. I presumed that meant there was an issue. To get around the problem, I downloaded the source from Mesa and compiled it myself. The .a that was generated identifies the following (using nm): 0000000000000640 D glwDrawingAreaClassRec 0000000000000728 D glwDrawingAreaWidgetClass I then compared it to /lib/libGLw.dll.a and got this: nm /lib/libGLw.dll.a | grep DrawingAreaClass 0000000000000000 I __imp_glwMDrawingAreaClassRec 0000000000000000 I __nm_glwMDrawingAreaClassRec 0000000000000000 I __imp_glwDrawingAreaClassRec 0000000000000000 I __nm_glwDrawingAreaClassRec Now I tried compiling your test program and found that it did work as you showed, but I then added the include of GLwDrawA.h, and it fails. This doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, and it doesn't seem right. What do you think? If I want to use the GLwDrawingAreaWidgetClass, I would presume that I should include the corresponding header file and the class would be defined. Thanks for your time, and I really do appreciate you and Cygwin. Looks like it's a temporary glitch, as it works fine for me when I tried it just now. Two other things to note though: 1. cygwinports.org is not cygwin.com so asking questions about it on cygwin.com mailing lists is really off-topic. cygwinports.org has its own mailing list if you have further questions about the packages and services it provides. 2. This list is reserved for Cygwin-X-specific issues. So if you have questions in the future related to Cygwin-X, this is the right mailing list. Otherwise, if it's a more general Cygwin issue, the main list (cygwin at cygwin dot com) is the right place. -- Larry _____________________________________________________________________ A: Yes. > Q: Are you sure? >> A: Because it reverses the logical flow of conversation. >>> Q: Why is top posting annoying in email? -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From yselkowitz@cygwin.com Fri Oct 31 07:49:00 2014 From: yselkowitz@cygwin.com (Yaakov Selkowitz) Date: Fri, 31 Oct 2014 07:49:00 -0000 Subject: [ANNOUNCEMENT] Updated: mesa-10.2.9-1 Message-ID: The following packages have been updated in the Cygwin distribution: * dri-drivers-10.2.9-1 * libEGL1-10.2.9-1 * libEGL-devel-10.2.9-1 * libGL1-10.2.9-1 * libGL-devel-10.2.9-1 * libGLESv1_CM1-10.2.9-1 * libGLESv1_CM-devel-10.2.9-1 * libGLESv2_2-10.2.9-1 * libGLESv2-devel-10.2.9-1 * libglapi0-10.2.9-1 * libOpenVG1-10.2.9-1 * libOpenVG-devel-10.2.9-1 * libOSMesa8-10.2.9-1 * libOSMesa-devel-10.2.9-1 Mesa is an open-source implementation of the OpenGL specification, a system for rendering interactive 3D graphics. This is an update to the latest (and possibly final) patch release for the 10.2 branch, and adds experimental hardware-accelerated direct rendering. Up through 8.x, OpenGL on Cygwin has been handled solely with indirect rendering, meaning that libGL passes calls over the GLX protocol to the server, which then handles the rendering with hardware acceleration in multiwindow/-wgl mode, or software rendering (swrast) in desktop/-nowgl mode. The major drawback of this method is that the GLX protocol only supports OpenGL 1.4, anything which requires 2.0 or newer (such as GLSL) cannot work. The previous 10.2.4 release added direct rendering support, where libGL handles the rendering itself via the swrast DRI module (llvmpipe), which provides complete OpenGL 3.0 and GLSL 1.30 support (along with numerous newer extensions), allowing much more OpenGL software to render correctly. This release further adds Windows-DRI: direct *hardware-accelerated* support, where libGL hands off to the graphics hardware via its Windows OpenGL drivers. This provides enhanced performance and support for even newer versions of OpenGL, but requires very recent graphics drivers and is only supported in multiwindow mode. As direct rendering is a new feature, the previous behaviour of indirect rendering is still the default. In order to enable direct rendering (and hence OpenGL 3.0 or newer), the following steps are required: 1) Add the following to your ~/.startxwinrc, ~/.xinitrc, or ~/.bashrc, or run this manually in the shell from which you will launch OpenGL applications: unset LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT (tcsh users need to use unsetenv instead of unset, of course.) 2) If Windows-DRI is desired in multiwindow mode, then add the following as well: export LIBGL_USE_WGL=1 (or "setenv LIBGL_USE_WGL 1" in tcsh, etc.) This release also fixes compatibility between swrast and AIGLX, so it is no longer necessary to specify -nowgl when using direct software rendering in multiwindow mode. Many thanks to Jon TURNEY for his continued work on OpenGL support which led to these new features. -- Yaakov Cygwin/X -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From yselkowitz@cygwin.com Fri Oct 31 07:52:00 2014 From: yselkowitz@cygwin.com (Yaakov Selkowitz) Date: Fri, 31 Oct 2014 07:52:00 -0000 Subject: [ANNOUNCEMENT] New: Qt 5.3.2 Message-ID: The following packages have been added to the Cygwin distribution: * libEnginio-devel-5.3.2-1 * libEnginio1-5.3.2-1 * libQt5Core-devel-5.3.2-1 * libQt5Core5-5.3.2-1 * libQt5Declarative-devel-5.3.2-1 * libQt5Declarative5-5.3.2-1 * libQt5Designer-devel-5.3.2-1 * libQt5Designer5-5.3.2-1 * libQt5Gui-devel-5.3.2-1 * libQt5Gui5-5.3.2-1 * libQt5Help-devel-5.3.2-1 * libQt5Help5-5.3.2-1 * libQt5Multimedia-devel-5.3.2-1 * libQt5Multimedia5-5.3.2-1 * libQt5Positioning-devel-5.3.2-1 * libQt5Positioning5-5.3.2-1 * libQt5Qml-devel-5.3.2-1 * libQt5Qml5-5.3.2-1 * libQt5Quick-devel-5.3.2-1 * libQt5Quick5-5.3.2-1 * libQt5Script-devel-5.3.2-1 * libQt5Script5-5.3.2-1 * libQt5ScriptTools-devel-5.3.2-1 * libQt5ScriptTools5-5.3.2-1 * libQt5SerialPort-devel-5.3.2-1 * libQt5SerialPort5-5.3.2-1 * libQt5Sql-devel-5.3.2-1 * libQt5Sql5-5.3.2-1 * libQt5Svg-devel-5.3.2-1 * libQt5Svg5-5.3.2-1 * libQt5X11Extras-devel-5.3.2-1 * libQt5X11Extras5-5.3.2-1 * libQt5XmlPatterns-devel-5.3.2-1 * libQt5XmlPatterns5-5.3.2-1 * qt5-base-doc-5.3.2-1 * qt5-base-examples-5.3.2-1 * qt5-declarative-doc-5.3.2-1 * qt5-declarative-examples-5.3.2-1 * qt5-declarative-tools-5.3.2-1 * qt5-devel-tools-5.3.2-1 * qt5-doc-tools-5.3.2-1 * qt5-enginio-doc-5.3.2-1 * qt5-imageformats-5.3.2-1 * qt5-imageformats-doc-5.3.2-1 * qt5-linguist-tools-5.3.2-1 * qt5-location-doc-5.3.2-1 * qt5-location-examples-5.3.2-1 * qt5-multimedia-doc-5.3.2-1 * qt5-multimedia-examples-5.3.2-1 * qt5-quick1-examples-5.3.2-1 * qt5-quick1-tools-5.3.2-1 * qt5-quickcontrols-5.3.2-1 * qt5-quickcontrols-doc-5.3.2-1 * qt5-quickcontrols-examples-5.3.2-1 * qt5-script-doc-5.3.2-1 * qt5-script-examples-5.3.2-1 * qt5-serialport-doc-5.3.2-1 * qt5-svg-doc-5.3.2-1 * qt5-svg-examples-5.3.2-1 * qt5-tools-doc-5.3.2-1 * qt5-tools-examples-5.3.2-1 * qt5-x11extras-doc-5.3.2-1 * qt5-xmlpatterns-doc-5.3.2-1 * qt5-xmlpatterns-examples-5.3.2-1 Qt is a cross-platform C++ application framework for desktop and embedded development. Qt enables programmers to create advanced GUI applications once and deploy them to multiple platforms without rewriting the source code. This release represents the latest upstream release of the Qt framework, and can be installed alongside the older 3.x and 4.x branches. It is important to note that Qt5OpenGL and Qt5Quick applications require OpenGL 2.0 or newer. Therefore, you *must* enable direct rendering (either swrast or Windows-DRI) as explained here: https://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-xfree-announce/2014-10/msg00008.html -- Yaakov Cygwin/X -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From yselkowitz@cygwin.com Fri Oct 31 07:55:00 2014 From: yselkowitz@cygwin.com (Yaakov Selkowitz) Date: Fri, 31 Oct 2014 07:55:00 -0000 Subject: [ANNOUNCEMENT] New: python*-pyqt5, Updated: python*-pyqt4, python*-sip, qscintilla2 Message-ID: The following packages have been updated for both arches: * libqscintilla2_11-2.8.4-1 * libqscintilla2-common-2.8.4-1 * libqscintilla2-devel-2.8.4-1 * python-pyqt4-4.11.2-1 * python-pyqt4-qsci-2.8.4-1 * python-pyqt5-5.3.2-1 * python-sip-4.16.4-1 * python3-pyqt4-4.11.2-1 * python3-pyqt4-qsci-2.8.4-1 * python3-pyqt5-5.3.2-1 * python3-sip-4.16.4-1 PyQt is a set of Python v2 and v3 bindings for Digia's Qt application framework and runs on all platforms supported by Qt.
