I've just tried installing Cygwin from the time machine (circa 2010/10/15-101233) in order to use the version of xorg-server that you mentioned. Unfortunately, I'm now encountering some issue where XWin stops responding (regardless of whether I'm using the font server or not). So I'll fall back onto Plan B, which is copying the fonts from our Solaris servers to each of the client machines. I think the following is incomplete. *** `x-select-enable-primary' now defaults to nil. Thus, commands that kill text or copy it to the kill-ring (such as M-w, C-w, and C-k) also use the clipboard---not the primary selection. I think that x-select-enable-primary also affects C-y. As for the cygwin-x-faq.html reference, I don't see the output symptomatic of Zone Alarm 5 causing trouble, so I gues that's not it, and all my mounts are binary, so it's not the /tmp issue. As for the long list of software in the cygwin FAQ that is known to interfere with cygwin, I'm sure I have some of that running (like citrix & McAfee), but as this is a work computer, I can't uninstall that stuff. To try to pin it down a little more, I straced startxwin & found some winsock errors showing up (see below). They keep repeating over and over again, so I guss that's where it's hanging & there must be some sort of interference at the socket level. This looks like perhaps the X server is somehow getting stuck trying to run xkbcomp during it's startup. I have an application that I have always compiled on Linux and then invoked via X Windows with my installed Cygwin X.? Basically use a shortcut to startwin.exe (full command is? C:\cygwin\bin\run.exe /usr/bin/bash.exe -l -c /usr/bin/startxwin.exe ).? This always started my X server in the background? (no root window, or invisible root window), and still does.? All I had to do is log into my server, export my DISPLAY and start the app. However I have recompiled my application with java 7 and now all of the radio buttons, buttons, scrollbars, and checkboxes, etc.? all still work as before.? The only thing that does NOT work is a text field.? I can not get the focus of the mouse in there, nor can I change or enter any data in those fields.? When I start Cygwin x from the Cygwin xterminal in?a windowed env?(e.g. starx from command line), and export my DISPLAY on the server, the application works, but is contained within the root window.? I never had to do it this way before and it looks slightly different, no separate window borders etc. We also use Reflection for an X server - that seems to run the recompiled application fine. Any ideas?? Also I apologize if I'm not saying this quite right! Thanks for any help.? If you need more info let me know. My host machine is Windows Vista 32 bit and am running a Lubuntu 12.10 guest VM using Virtualbox.? I've started the XWin server, connected to the VM using SSH and opened an xterm, set LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1.? Running "glxinfo | grep OpenGL" tells me that I am picking up my graphics card and glxgears also appears to give me good performance (~2kfps) so believe WGL to be working ok. When I try to start my OpenGL application from the xterm and work through a typical use case, I appear to be getting "ghost" windows left behind from windows/message boxes that appear as I work through my example.? These also appear when I left click the left mouse and I can't find a way of getting rid of them.? Also the performance generally seems to be a bit temperamental and "flickery" between what should be displayed and these "leftover" windows depending on where I click on the screen. Have I included sufficient information?? I have a couple of jpegs I could upload if this helps. I'm thinking it could be an issue related to the second of the known issues here: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ug/using-aiglx.html What can I do to improve the performance of my application? Many thanks! P.S. Incidentally I know that my application works without any problems in the latest version of Xming (7.5.0.64) but would like to try get Cygwin/X up and running to the same performance if possible. -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From dan_humphreys@yahoo.co.uk Fri Apr 19 09:05:00 2013 From: dan_humphreys@yahoo.co.uk (Daniel Humphreys) Date: Fri, 19 Apr 2013 09:05:00 -0000 Subject: OpenGL application performance and "ghost" windows remaining In-Reply-To: <1366361715.78751.YahooMailNeo@web171302.mail.ir2.yahoo.com> References: <1366299098.82234.YahooMailNeo@web171305.mail.ir2.yahoo.com> <1366361715.78751.YahooMailNeo@web171302.mail.ir2.yahoo.com> Message-ID: <1366362335.51628.YahooMailNeo@web171306.mail.ir2.yahoo.com> Hi I've done some more testing... Virden) Date: Tue, 30 Apr 2013 14:21:00 -0000 Subject: struggling with xauth vs xhost Message-ID: While in the process of moving from a commercial X server to the cygwin Xfree server, we seem to have run into a peculiar behavior. The previous environment made heavy use of xhost. I proposed that in cygwin xfree we move to xauth as a more secure environment. That has for the most part worked out. The environment is that the x applications are running on a Solaris 10 sparc machine, displaying back to Win7 desktops with cygwin 1.7.x running on them. When a user chooses the single X window method of opening a local window which ssh's over to the Unix machines, things seem to work okay. When they choose the "full screen" approach, where the entire window takes over the desktop, and the window manager and everything else is running remotely, an xhost is being executed. This causes some applications to fail because the language used considers that to be a security risk. When we look in both local start up files as well as remote start up files, we do not see where the xhost is being performed. Is there a way for us to track down where that is occurring so that we can see about commenting that out? Thanks! -- Tcl - The glue of a new generation. http://wiki.tcl.tk/ Larry W.
