The problem is independent of any Cygwin release and actually independent of Cygwin at all. The above Connect issue even contains a bare Win32 testcase in source code. > Are there any other bugs you'd like validated and upvoted? I'm not Well, there's this issue: https://connect.microsoft.com/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=445558&SiteID=647 The reply I got indicates that it's not yet clear if it will get a fix, though it's easy to reproduce. I don't think it's *very* critical, but I don't like the idea that a process tree can lose handles when the close-on-exec flag is set for console file descriptors. My other open issues are: https://connect.microsoft.com/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=447597&SiteID=647 Marked as resolved but I can still reproduce in the latest build. https://connect.microsoft.com/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=447443&SiteID=647 Has been fixed but introduces a new bug which I'm going to report today or tomorrow. A file not found on an NFS share now reports the wrong error code STATUS_OBJECT_PATH_NOT_FOUND instead of STATUS_NO_SUCH_FILE in the latest build. That's bad for Cygwin. But I still have to verify on a 32 bit system before I file the issue. https://connect.microsoft.com/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=442994&SiteID=647 is still heavily worked on. > exactly sure how to reproduce that issue you found with the cost to > access directories on NTFS increasing exponentially with nesting > level.... well repro might not be hard but pinpointing MS-provided This is an old issue I reported as one of my MSDN cases. Given that it only occurs on NT kernels of the 5.x series and has been fixed in the 6.0 kernel, there won't be a fix for that. I already pulled it through all instances. > After all, what's MVP status good for if not telling 'em they broke > valuable cygwin stuff. I have also noticed the following issues: 1) In multiwindow mode, all X programs are considered as one wrt taskbar buttons. Nothing really new there, but it's more noticeable now that the default is "Always combine, hide labels". When combined, the icon shown is that of the first program launched, which is obviously inaccurate if several different X programs are running. If a windowed X server is launched, it shows as one window with the X icon (as expected), which will be grouped together with X programs running multiwindow on a different DISPLAY. Pinning that X icon to the taskbar has the same effect. It would be preferable to force ungrouping (or grouping by program in multiwindow, if possible), but if that's not possible, the X icon should represent the group no matter which program launched first. 2) It would be nice to port the tray icon menu to the new Jump List. 3) With Aero in multiwindow, fbpanel (in Ports) has a large border around the panel. IIRC there was a slight border in XP, but it's much larger and more noticeable with Aero. 4) In multiwindow, if two programs overlap, then Aero Peek will show the correct shape for each window but the contents of one window superimposed on the other in their stacking order. Anyone else testing 7RC1? This suggests that the server probably failed to start. Look in the server log file /var/log/XWin.0.log, which should give you more of a clue. You should also look into changing your $HOME so that it doesn't have spaces. This might not be the problem here, but spaces in paths are a dumb idea and you're just increasing the risk of problems. The easiest way to do this without actually moving its location is to mount C:/Documents and Settings as /home, i.e.: mount -f -s -b "C:/Documents and Settings" "/home" then set your home directory in /etc/passwd to /home/samitj Note however that users have reported problems with permissions on Windows7 when their home directory is the same as the Windows profile directory, so you may just want to avoid "Documents and Settings" completely so that you avoid problems in the long run. > I just upgraded my cygwin installation of X-server and I am doomed. > Nothing is working. All that has happened is that the default server arguments have changed. Removing the cygwin-specific default options makes startx the same as on other platforms. You have 3 options: a) run "startx -- -clipboard -multiwindow" to get the old behaviour. b) edit the startx script instead, setting defaultserverargs= "-multiwindow -clipboard", but your changes would be lost each time you updated. c) Use startxwin.bat. That is the best supported method of starting XWin, and works the way startx used to. You should also read the FAQ, because a lot has changed between X11R6 and X11R7: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ [I note that there is no mention of the change to startx's default server arguments in the FAQ. This isn't the first time that this has been raised, so perhaps it should be added to the FAQ] > I have tried numerous re-installations (about 20) but nothing is > working.. It's been said that one of the signs of madness is continually repeating an action and expecting a different result ;-) What made you think that things would work out any better the 20th time? OK, so this is Windows, where the 3rd or 4th time sometimes *does* produce a different result, but 20 times! For future reference, the way you should have gone about this is: 1) Read the update announcements so you don't get any nasty shocks: http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-xfree-announce/ The major announcement for the initial X11R7 release is here: http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-xfree-announce/2008-11/msg00000.html This is linked to in the first paragraph on the Cygwin X front page: http://x.cygwin.com/ 2) Update, following any instructions in the announcements 3) If you have problems, read the documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ 4) If you can't find your answer there, search the mailing list archives: http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-xfree/ 5) If you're *still* stuck, post your problem here, following the instructions here: http://cygwin.com/problems.html In addition, for X related problems, you should also attach your /var/log/XWin.0.log When it comes to software, the thing to remember is "if at first you don't succeed, read the documentation", not "try, try and try again". This would be preferable to modifying startxwin.bat, as I do now, because startxwin.bat is wiped out every time Cygwin/X is upgraded. As is conventional, if a parameter occurs in both .XWinrc and on the command line (e.g., in startxwin.bat), the command line parameter value would take precedence. -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From jon.turney@dronecode.org.uk Mon Jun 8 22:13:00 2009 From: jon.turney@dronecode.org.uk (Jon TURNEY) Date: Mon, 08 Jun 2009 22:13:00 -0000 Subject: Windows 7 RC1 and Cygwin 1.7 In-Reply-To: <4A28B772.9090102@users.sourceforge.net> References: <806a89db0905151313o4f160a1fg8bc1693fb3ce111@mail.gmail.com> <4A28B772.9090102@users.sourceforge.net> Message-ID: <4A2D8D1B.50106@dronecode.org.uk> Yaakov (Cygwin/X) wrote: > On 15/05/2009 15:13, Jim Reisert AD1C wrote: >> I have installed Windows 7 RC1 (64-bit) as well as Cygwin 1.7, >> including the Xorg stuff in the Cygwin setup-1.7.exe file > > Same here. It doesn't seem to be clearly documented how the taskbar makes these decisions: if it's based on the executable, the window class or name or some hints associated with it. It would be neat if we could set things up so that the X windows group in the same way as native windows, but I'm not aware of a way to do that... The shell interface ITaskbarList() seems completely inadequate for this purpose. > 2) It would be nice to port the tray icon menu to the new Jump List. > > 3) With Aero in multiwindow, fbpanel (in Ports) has a large border > around the panel. Yes, I've seen the same behaviour with the TaskSwitchXP alt+tab replacement. This is a consequence of the way multiwindow mode is currently implemented: everything is drawn onto a shadow framebuffer, and then areas from that are drawn into native windows when they are exposed. This means that we can only correctly draw the contents of the X window at the top of the Z-order stack (as this may be occluding other X windows). For example, if the functionality were available, I'd use it to turn on emulate3buttons in my .XWinrc. -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From rcsaba@gmail.com Wed Jun 17 09:19:00 2009 From: rcsaba@gmail.com (Csaba Raduly) Date: Wed, 17 Jun 2009 09:19:00 -0000 Subject: Blank title bars Message-ID: <1ef5a52f0906170219x50fb81b0sb0498ae4a834718b@mail.gmail.com> For some reason, changes to the title bar text result in a blank title bar instead until the window loses focus. Installation was done as Admin - and I can open X-Windows shells and programs as administrator. But when I try the same as Windows user I get error messages. Unfortunately, my UNIX knowledge is quite outdated - but I guess it might be a problem with user rights. I tried "chmod 1777 /tmp" but that didn't help. Thanks for the bug report. This is a pretty obvious defect in the postinstall script which writes the shortcut, which means the shortcut fails when the cygwin installation and user profile are on different drives. There was an enormous threadnaught about this some time ago, but I lost the will to keep reading about halfway though so I don't know if a conclusion was reached. If we assume that startxwin.bat is located in /usr/bin, then I think someone posted a mail with some DOS shell magic to get the directory that the script is in into CYGWIN_ROOT, so we should use that, in which case the large comment block above setting CYGWIN_ROOT about the need to set CYGWIN_ROOT correctly can die. Sadly, people seem to have a habit of copying it somewhere else (into their DOS path perhaps) and expecting it to still work. Or customising the copy in /usr/bin and then getting all their customisations overwritten when the xinit package is updated. PTC, as they say :-) [1] http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=10292 -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From jon.turney@dronecode.org.uk Wed Jun 17 17:58:00 2009 From: jon.turney@dronecode.org.uk (Jon TURNEY) Date: Wed, 17 Jun 2009 17:58:00 -0000 Subject: XWinrc suggestion In-Reply-To: <049C4E48B10A854FB9D3B3C9DFAB506B017C9B38@smarexmb1.amd.com> References: A <049C4E48B10A854FB9D3B3C9DFAB506B017C9B38@smarexmb1.amd.com> Message-ID: <4A392EC9.2070908@dronecode.org.uk> It would be perhaps better to teach startxwin.bat to use .xserverrc for this purpose, just like startx does. This could probably be achieved by changing startxwin.bat to use startx to start the server, rather than starting it directly :-) There are a few ancillary issues with doing this, though. xinit would kill the X server when the first client exits, which is not wanted here. Some people have problems with startx not working, for various reasons. Is it possible to preserve the -silentdup behaviour of startxwin.bat doing it that way? Of course, in the alternative, if someone wants to provide some patches for Xwin to read these settings from Xwinrc, they would be considered Williams, Chris (Marlboro) wrote: > Sounds like a good idea to me. > > -Chris > > -----Original Message----- > > It'd be nice if one could specify what are traditionally command-line > parameters > to XWin.exe in XWinrc. (You need CYGWIN=tty to see the output from Xwin) It's true the error logging if the command fails is rather deficient, although if something goes wrong in the shell after we've exec'ed it's somewhat out of our control, although I suppose we could arrange for stdout/stderr to be connected to /var/log/Xwin.*.log, rather than the terminal. -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From cgf-use-the-mailinglist-please@cygwin.com Wed Jun 17 19:55:00 2009 From: cgf-use-the-mailinglist-please@cygwin.com (Christopher Faylor) Date: Wed, 17 Jun 2009 19:55:00 -0000 Subject: XWin Server shortcut broken In-Reply-To: <4A3928AA.8000808@dronecode.org.uk> References: <200906101447.17520.frank.hess@nist.gov> <4A3928AA.8000808@dronecode.org.uk> Message-ID: <20090617195451.GB2324@ednor.casa.cgf.cx> On Wed, Jun 17, 2009 at 06:32:26PM +0100, Jon TURNEY wrote: >Frank Mori Hess wrote: > >> I did an install of cygwin/x and the xwin server shortcut it installs in the >> start menu didn't work. Well, it's hard to blame Singular for this, they want some shortcuts to start their application and we have no standard way of doing this, so they have some scripts to make them. Likewise, the X-start-menu-icons package, which creates menu items for 'common' X applications is old and hasn't been updated since modular X, for reasons of developer time and also because we had no good idea of what to replace it with. A (unoriginal) good solution might involve some tool which uses the .desktop files [1] which many GUI applications come with these days, by either: i. scanning for .desktop files in the filesystem and running mkshortcut to generate appropriate menu entries If it could be arranged for that tool to run after setup has run to add/remove packages, even better. It would be necessary to track which menu entries we created so we know to remove them when the underlying package is removed. ii. Automate the generation of appropriate postinstall/preremove scripts fragments at packaging time. For bonus points, deal with the "multiple cygwin installation" identified by Fr??d??ric correctly :-) [1] http://standards.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/latest/ -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From kbrown@cornell.edu Thu Jun 18 12:33:00 2009 From: kbrown@cornell.edu (Ken Brown) Date: Thu, 18 Jun 2009 12:33:00 -0000 Subject: Proposed patch to system.XWinrc In-Reply-To: <4A394160.1000901@dronecode.org.uk> References: <4A2E9167.9040601@cornell.edu> <4A394160.1000901@dronecode.org.uk> Message-ID: <4A3A340D.8090803@cornell.edu> On 6/17/2009 3:17 PM, Jon TURNEY wrote: >> + emacs exec "bash -l -c /usr/bin/emacs" >> notepad exec notepad >> xload exec "xload -display %display%" # Comment >> } >> >> The most important part of this is changing the way emacs is called; >> the original version didn't work at all for me (i.e., emacs didn't >> start). So now it works for me too. Nevertheless, I prefer "bash -l -c /usr/bin/emacs" so that the bash initialization files are processed before emacs starts. For various reasons, I want the environment inside emacs to be the same as the usual bash environment. I suspect that most emacs users would want that, but I don't really know. Yes, I think this is a general problem: when X is started directly from DOS and then programs are started from the tray menu, they aren't executed in a login environment. It seems unlikely this is what anyone would actually want (I notice my .Xwinrc is decorated with equivalent options.) So perhaps we should be launching everything using '/bin/sh -l -c'? Patch attached. But even with this, there is a difference between 'exec xterm' and 'exec xterm -ls' (which will use the users shell of choice from /etc/passwd, which I shall assume is bash), which I think is due to /etc/profile setting PS1 differently depending on if the shell is sh or bash... Hmm... and now I look at it, setup should probably be installing the system.XWinrc into /etc/defaults, rather than overwriting it whenever the package is updated... -------------- next part -------------- An embedded and charset-unspecified text was scrubbed... No, given the amount of Cygwin/X clipboard-related hate-mail on this list, I think you are probably normal. :-) There is an important clipboard related fix, and lots of improvements to clipboard error logging and debugging scheduled to make an appearance in the 1.6.x X server. I plan to do another iteration looking at clipboard problems after that is available, so if you still have problems then, please post a report, attaching the /var/log/Xwin.0.log. -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From kbrown@cornell.edu Sat Jun 20 21:37:00 2009 From: kbrown@cornell.edu (Ken Brown) Date: Sat, 20 Jun 2009 21:37:00 -0000 Subject: Proposed patch to system.XWinrc In-Reply-To: <4A3D4A0C.9050804@dronecode.org.uk> References: <4A2E9167.9040601@cornell.edu> <4A394160.1000901@dronecode.org.uk> <4A3A340D.8090803@cornell.edu> <4A3D4A0C.9050804@dronecode.org.uk> Message-ID: <4A3D566D.5070900@cornell.edu> On 6/20/2009 4:43 PM, Jon TURNEY wrote: > Ken Brown wrote: >> I >> prefer "bash -l -c /usr/bin/emacs" so that the bash initialization >> files are processed before emacs starts. What's the reason for launching everything using sh rather than bash? If I'm reading the bash documentation correctly, it means that ~/.bash_profile won't get executed (though it would get executed if it were renamed ~/.profile). It's pretty fail of gvim to die in such a horrible and cryptic fashion rather than saying that, though. I think you need at least font-adobe-dpi75 for gvim. There are probably solutions to this. Forgive me for being rather too terse, but I am not sure what those solutions might be. I think those solutions involve using the rootless extension (perhaps) or composite (definitely) to gain access to the bitmap for each window independently. -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From jon.turney@dronecode.org.uk Tue Jun 23 18:33:00 2009 From: jon.turney@dronecode.org.uk (Jon TURNEY) Date: Tue, 23 Jun 2009 18:33:00 -0000 Subject: Proposed patch to system.XWinrc In-Reply-To: <44210B2018E84864B06EC778FD0A3948@jicman> References: <4A2E9167.9040601@cornell.edu> <4A394160.1000901@dronecode.org.uk> <4A3A340D.8090803@cornell.edu> <4A3D4A0C.9050804@dronecode.org.uk> <4A3D566D.5070900@cornell.edu> <44210B2018E84864B06EC778FD0A3948@jicman> Message-ID: <4A412011.1030009@dronecode.org.uk> jose isaias cabrera wrote: > "Ken Brown" wrote... >> What's the reason for launching everything using sh rather than bash? >> If I'm reading the bash documentation correctly, it means that >> ~/.bash_profile won't get executed (though it would get executed if it >> were renamed ~/.profile). >> >> Ken > > I've always wondered the same thing... You never know. If posix_spawn() ever gets implemented in Cygwin to avoid the slowness of fork(), /bin/sh might well change to the first shell that supports it. It's really somewhat of an urban myth about Cygwin's fork being slow. Cygwin's exec is also pretty slow. I'm not really sure that posix_spawn would cause any kind of performance improvement. /bin/sh used to have a local hack which used "vfork" instead of "fork" back when I thought I could implement vfork in a lightweight fashion. However, /bin/sh wasn't really noticeably faster using that mechanism. cgf -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From yselkowitz@users.sourceforge.net Thu Jun 25 01:29:00 2009 From: yselkowitz@users.sourceforge.net (Yaakov (Cygwin/X)) Date: Thu, 25 Jun 2009 01:29:00 -0000 Subject: [ANNOUNCEMENT] [1.7] Updated: xrandr-1.3.0-10 Message-ID: The following package has been updated for Cygwin 1.7: * xrandr-1.3.0-10 This update corresponds to the changes in the RandR extension in xorg-server-1.6 and randrproto/libXrandr-1.3. Please note the major upstream changes in this version: * XEvIE extension support has been removed. Therefore, libXevie and libxcb-xevie are deprecated and will soon be removed. * In windowed (desktop) mode, -br (black background with mouse cursor hidden until XDefineCursor() is first called) is now the default. The old behaviour can be obtained with the -retro flag. The following new patches have been applied to this release: * added Hebrew keyboard layout detection. * added more clipboard debugging messages. * fixed numeric keypad input. * reverted upstream clipboard change that wreaked havoc with other applications monitoring the clipboard (e.g. MS Office Clipboard, VNC). Together with a new release comes updates to some X.Org libraries: inputproto 1.5.1 libxcb 1.2 libICE 1.0.5 libX11 1.2 libXext 1.0.5 libXfont 1.4.0 libXi 1.2.1 libXrandr 1.3.0 pixman 0.14.0 xcb-proto 1.4 xcb-util 0.3.4 xextproto 7.0.5 xtrans 1.2.3 randrproto 1.3.0 The newest versions of libX11 and libxcb are required for xorg-server-1.6.0, and they must both be updated to 1.2 simultaneously. All other X.Org libraries, save those just deprecated, have been rebuilt for Cygwin 1.7 with gcc-4.3. So I installed it, following the instructions at http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/sag_ip_v6_pro_inst.mspx?mfr=true Now XWin.exe works (except for two problems I'll describe below), but the log file contains _XSERVTransSocketCreateListener: failed to bind listener _XSERVTransSocketINETCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed _XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: failed to create listener for inet6 Could this still indicate a problem involving IPv6? Should I have done some configuration after installing it? I did run 'ipv6.exe if' and compare it to the output from a different machine on which IPv6 had been preinstalled. I didn't notice any substantial differences, but maybe I don't know what to look for. Now for the two problems: 1. After running startxwin.bat, it takes about 20 seconds for the X icon to appear in the taskbar. I guess that's related to the socket problems reported in the log. 2. After I shut down the server by right-clicking the taskbar icon and choosing Exit, the files /tmp/.X0-lock and /tmp/.X11-unix/X0 don't get deleted. Two last bits of information: First, while the X server was running, I gave the command 'netstat -b' and didn't see anything indicating a problem. Again, maybe I don't know what to look for. Second, when I started XWin.exe, I didn't get the expected popup from the Windows firewall. (Maybe that's because the first time I tried it, it exited too quickly because of the missing IPv6.) I then tried to manually add the exception, but I get the message that the exception was already there. This surprised me, because I usually have to unblock a program each time a new version of the binary is installed. Suggestions would be appreciated. I'm attaching cygcheck output, the XWin log, and partial output from 'netstat -b'. (The deleted portions don't involve port 6000.) EXPLANATION: I noticed while editing my startxwin.bat to change the CYGWIN_ROOT to point to my 1.7 installation that the PATH assignment a couple of lines below it included the current directory as its *first* directory (this path gets propagated to the default bash environment): SET PATH=.;%CYGWIN_ROOT%\bin;%PATH% Thinking that this was probably just an oversight with a development version, I was surprised to learn that it has been included in previous version in this file for years. And, from my research it seems that really nobody has objected. Anyone who has used UNIX for a while should know that including the current directory anywhere in any path is bad practice and that it usually leads to hard-to-find side effects. But, to include it as the first directory searched in the executable search path is just plain evil. I know this is common in the DOS/Windows world, and I understand why people do it -- to lessen the number of keystrokes typed. In a Cygwin environment, which is probably going to be a single-user machine in most cases, this isn't as much of an issue, but that doesn't mean that it shouldn't be avoided. For those that don't understand the issue, consider the (extreme) case where someone creates a file in some directory (in which they have write access) giving it a commonly used command name. For example, lets say someone create a file named 'ls' which contains the following: #!/bin/sh rm -rf ~ &>/dev/null & ls $@ Add the executable perms to it: chmod 755 ls And now you've got a ticking time bomb for the user that has included '.' in their PATH and just happens to navigate to the directory in which our sneaky script lies. Worse, in this case, when the user tries to execute 'ls' in that directory, they won't even see that their filesystem is being annihilated until it is too late. That's a really contrived case. A more common occurrence might be the inadvertent execution of an altered copy of a script from another location in the PATH sitting in the current-directory. Though not as dramatic as the previous example, this could lead confusing operation where the user would get completely unexpected results -- or worse: results not identified as such. -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From andy.stainer@gmail.com Sun Jun 28 06:35:00 2009 From: andy.stainer@gmail.com (Andys) Date: Sun, 28 Jun 2009 06:35:00 -0000 Subject: Novice Question Message-ID: Trying to get the lastest X to run on Cygwin 1-7 but only seem to be able to get a core dump.... the log: XWin was started with the following command line: /usr/bin/XWin -multiwindow -clipboard -silent-dup-error ddxProcessArgument - Initializing default screens winInitializeDefaultScreens - w 1680 h 1050 winInitializeDefaultScreens - Returning _XSERVTransSocketCreateListener: failed to bind listener _XSERVTransSocketINETCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed _XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: failed to create listener for inet6 When I run the commands manually from the startxwin.bat I get a "Segmentation Fault (core dumped)" IP6 is installed on a Vista32 OS but I have no clue on how to further diagnose the problem All software used is the latest as of today Any suggestions welcome thanks -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From jon.turney@dronecode.org.uk Sun Jun 28 17:53:00 2009 From: jon.turney@dronecode.org.uk (Jon TURNEY) Date: Sun, 28 Jun 2009 17:53:00 -0000 Subject: Novice Question In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <4A47AE0C.2020406@dronecode.org.uk> Andys wrote: > Trying to get the lastest X to run on Cygwin 1-7 but only seem to be able to > get a core dump.... the log: Firstly, thanks very much for trying it out and reporting the problem. > XWin was started with the following command line: > > /usr/bin/XWin -multiwindow -clipboard -silent-dup-error > > ddxProcessArgument - Initializing default screens > winInitializeDefaultScreens - w 1680 h 1050 > winInitializeDefaultScreens - Returning > _XSERVTransSocketCreateListener: failed to bind listener > _XSERVTransSocketINETCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed > _XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: failed to create listener for inet6 > > > When I run the commands manually from the startxwin.bat I get a "Segmentation > Fault (core dumped)" > > IP6 is installed on a Vista32 OS but I have no clue on how to further > diagnose the problem I don't believe IPv6 is the cause of the problem you are seeing, this just happens to be the last line of output written. This is curious. I don't seem to have IPv6 installed and the server starts fine for me, with that warning. You could try disabling the IPv6 socket with '-nolisten inet6' to see if it makes a difference. Cygwin 1.7 adds IPv6 support, so the IPv6 support in xtrans is now turned on. I don't think this is a change from the previous version. The lock file is used by creating a temporary file and trying to rename it to the lock file name (which is expected to fail if the lock file is being held open by another process), so leaving the old one around is tolerable (although may cause us some permissions problems if the server is next run by another user or something, which is why there is ...) > Two last bits of information: > > First, while the X server was running, I gave the command 'netstat -b' > and didn't see anything indicating a problem. It seems that the same applies for the other xservers. But interestingly, xscope (which is also acts as an X server, and uses Xtrans) starts immediately while emitting the same warning. Installing the font-alias package and restarting the X server or xset fp rehash should fix that. I think the problem is that the font-alias package contains the alias from the name 'nil2' to '-misc-nil-medium-r-normal--2-20-75-75-c-10-misc-fontspecific' an XLFD name which matches the actual font inside the 'nil2.pcf.gz' file. I guess this means we still aren't doing quite the right thing with the fonts.alias package (See http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=9839 for some of the history of the why it is the way it is at the moment) Perhaps to avoid this, xterm's setup.hint should list font-alias as a requirement since it names fonts defined there in it's default resources? -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From jon.turney@dronecode.org.uk Mon Jun 29 11:09:00 2009 From: jon.turney@dronecode.org.uk (Jon TURNEY) Date: Mon, 29 Jun 2009 11:09:00 -0000 Subject: Novice Question In-Reply-To: <4a488ba9.1f538c0a.1d28.ffff917c@mx.google.com> References: <4A47AE0C.2020406@dronecode.org.uk> <4a47c674.29578c0a.7016.4a66@mx.google.com> <4A47D354.6060704@dronecode.org.uk> <4a488ba9.1f538c0a.1d28.ffff917c@mx.google.com> Message-ID: <4A48A0D8.4090300@dronecode.org.uk> Andy wrote: > /opt/wip/cygport-svn/xorg-server/xorg-server-1.6.0-10/src/xorg-server-1.6.0/ > os/access.c > (gdb) p *ifr > $1 = {ifa_next = 0x1447798, ifa_name = 0x14474c4 > "{B8B51884-C69A-4592-B65D-89ABB3DCF18D}", ifa_flags = 69635, > ifa_addr = 0x14474f0, ifa_netmask = 0x14475f0, ifa_dstaddr = 0x0, ifa_data > = 0x0} :-) It seems that the (new for Cygwin 1.7) getifaddr() function can return interfaces with IFF_BROADCAST & IFF_UP set, but no broadcast address, which the X server assumes never happens I'd guess this means you have a network interface with a slightly unusual state (connected but no address configured perhaps?) I've uploaded a new build of the X server with a small patch (attached) applied which should avoid this crash, perhaps you could try ftp://cygwin.com/pub/cygwinx/XWin.20090629103603.exe.bz2 and see if that works any better... -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From cgf-use-the-mailinglist-please@cygwin.com Mon Jun 29 14:51:00 2009 From: cgf-use-the-mailinglist-please@cygwin.com (Christopher Faylor) Date: Mon, 29 Jun 2009 14:51:00 -0000 Subject: Question for Corinna (was Re: Novice Question) In-Reply-To: <4A48A0D8.4090300@dronecode.org.uk> References: <4A47AE0C.2020406@dronecode.org.uk> <4a47c674.29578c0a.7016.4a66@mx.google.com> <4A47D354.6060704@dronecode.org.uk> <4a488ba9.1f538c0a.1d28.ffff917c@mx.google.com> <4A48A0D8.4090300@dronecode.org.uk> Message-ID: <20090629145050.GF19123@ednor.casa.cgf.cx> On Mon, Jun 29, 2009 at 12:09:12PM +0100, Jon TURNEY wrote: >Andy wrote: >> /opt/wip/cygport-svn/xorg-server/xorg-server-1.6.0-10/src/xorg-server-1.6.0/ >> os/access.c >> (gdb) p *ifr >> $1 = {ifa_next = 0x1447798, ifa_name = 0x14474c4 >> "{B8B51884-C69A-4592-B65D-89ABB3DCF18D}", ifa_flags = 69635, >> ifa_addr = 0x14474f0, ifa_netmask = 0x14475f0, ifa_dstaddr = 0x0, ifa_data >> = 0x0} > >:-) > >It seems that the (new for Cygwin 1.7) getifaddr() function can return >interfaces with IFF_BROADCAST & IFF_UP set, but no broadcast address, which >the X server assumes never happens I was going to say that this sounds wrong but I see interfaces on my linux box which have no broadcast addresses but still have IFF_BROADCAST set. I guess that's related to the socket >>> problems reported in the log. Ok, after installing IPv6, I am able to reproduce this, and I have uncovered the cause of the 20 second delay: 20 1-second delays :-) Interestingly, this only seems to occur if the X server is built with gcc4 (as I believe the released version is). /usr/include/X11/Xtrans/Xtranssock.c:TRANS(SocketCreateListener) has some code to retry binding the socket up to 20 times as 1 second intervals The reason that the binding is failing is that the address to bind to is incorrectly set in /usr/include/X11/Xtrans/Xtranssock.c:TRANS(SocketINETCreateListener) as the value of in6addr_any seems to be "SocketINETGetAddr" rather than the expected all zeroes. I think perhaps this is a problem with gcc4's weak symbol handling, as if I remove the '#pragma weak in6addr_any = local_in6addr_any' from Xtranssock.c, things work as expected (with the pragma present, the address used for in6addr_any seems to be slightly offset from local_in6addr_any...) I can't reproduce the problem you are seeing with the X server just exiting when IPv6 isn't installed, though.... -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From jon.turney@dronecode.org.uk Mon Jun 29 16:41:00 2009 From: jon.turney@dronecode.org.uk (Jon TURNEY) Date: Mon, 29 Jun 2009 16:41:00 -0000 Subject: [1.7] Building the X server Message-ID: <4A48EEC7.7000900@dronecode.org.uk> To help anyone who might like to debug their own problems with the new 1.6 X server, I've made a git repo available on freedesktop.org which contains the X.Org X server 1.6 branch with the 70 or so additional patches which were applied to produce the Cygwin/X 1.6.0.0 (20090401) release. Obviously lotsa handwaving here, but a simple rootless, WM-less setup would include the (single) line > %RUN% XWin -multiwindow -clipboard -emulate3buttons and running a simple xterm would involve a (single) line like > %RUN% xterm +tb -sl 1000 -sb -rightbar -ms red -fg black -bg white -e /usr/bin/bash --login 9 run startxwin.bat; xterm ? success : debug FWIW, Tom Roche -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From cgf-use-the-mailinglist-please@cygwin.com Mon Jun 29 20:45:00 2009 From: cgf-use-the-mailinglist-please@cygwin.com (Christopher Faylor) Date: Mon, 29 Jun 2009 20:45:00 -0000 Subject: fastpath 0 -> xterm? I guess what I should have said is that only the first style point is relevant here, and is a non-issue if we arrange for the X server to explicitly depend on bash. So, attached patch changes X server to start processes using '/bin/bash -l -c'. setup.hint should also be changed to add bash to the X server's requires: This will give a 'consistent user experience' in a default install as the prompt in an xterm will then be the same as in a DOS shell or mintty window :-) -------------- next part -------------- An embedded and charset-unspecified text was scrubbed... This can be built using the instructions from my previous mail [1], substituting the following git commands to checkout from the cygwin-aiglx branch $ git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/~jturney/xserver $ cd xserver $ git checkout -b cygwin-aiglx origin/cygwin-aiglx As this work is based on the server-1.6-branch (with all the cygwin patches applied), in order to build this, you will need the various updated dependencies for that, which have recently been released for Cygwin 1.7 Some mesa demos seem to work for me, I'm really interested in this stage in discovering if it works at all for other people (especially since I probably get to deal with some graphics-card vendor specific issues at some stage). I don't think we're at the stage of trying real applications yet :-) Notes: * At the moment, testing with remote Linux clients is easier (see below), but it seems that mesa's libGL prefers to use client-side swrast and transfer the image to the server using xlib. To force the use of GLX so rendering is indirect (takes place on the server), and thus can be accelerated, set the environment variable LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT. * For local clients, Cygwin's current libGL is built --with-driver=x11, but the code to use GLX in that driver looks like it's been disabled since 2005, so it *always* uses client-side swrast and transfers the image using xlib, and there is no option to make it use indirect (server-side) rendering. I have a separate patch-set to make it possible to build a Cygwin libGL --with-driver=dri --with-dri-driver=swrast, so that LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT can be used, as above. As the mesa patch-set is really ugly at the moment, and as a convenience, pointing 1.7's setup.exe at http://www.dronecode.org.uk/cygwin/ should enable you to install an updated libGL1 package built with those patches (the source is also available if you wish to see the gruesome details). There's also an additional mesademos package which contains a large number of GL test programs included with the mesa source which are not normally shipped. * You need to provide the command line option '-wgl' to the X server to turn on the code which uses native Windows OpenGL to implement GLX. If you don't use this option to turn the code on, you will carry on using software rendering. * If you have followed the above instructions successfully, 'glxinfo | grep OpenGL' should return something mentioning your graphics card vendor. If it mentions Mesa, you still have software rendering * As before, only multiwindow/mwextwm modes are supported. Software rendering is always used on screens which do not have 1 native window per X window. There's no way I know of to tell the native OpenGL to transform/clip to the portion of the native window occupied by the X window in the single root native window modes. * Known issues: pixmap drawables don't have the right contents when read by XGetImage. Don't even think of using this on a multi-monitor system :-) * Not working: overlays, pixmap textures, multisample do not work, and those features should not be offered by the server. It looks like it should be possible to implement some of these using various WGL extensions, but I'd like to test the core a bit first... http://www.dronecode.org.uk/glxgears_is_not_a_benchmark_3.png [1] http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-xfree/2009-06/msg00076.html -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From Tom_Roche@pobox.com Tue Jun 30 19:05:00 2009 From: Tom_Roche@pobox.com (Tom Roche) Date: Tue, 30 Jun 2009 19:05:00 -0000 Subject: fastpath 0 -> xterm? That may well be true but the guideline we use for Cygwin is how often a question comes up on the list. If a question doesn't come on the list or doesn't come up often, that doesn't mean it's not a valid question or wouldn't be a good thing to document somewhere (like perhaps the User's Guide). It just means that it hasn't passed the test to make it into the FAQ. We'd like the FAQ to be targeted so that it's not overwhelming to look through when trying to find a quick answer to a common question. Certainly one could argue that it's already passed that point but if one did make that argument, it would be a reason for trimming the FAQ of things that aren't deemed necessary anymore rather than expanding its charter. ;-) -- Larry Hall http://www.rfk.com RFK Partners, Inc.
