I just installed cygwin on a laptop with german layout. I have two problems: 1) I have to press "~" two times to have it shown. This has been happening since several days. 2) I created a new account today (the older one had "space" in the login name, and every script using $HOME variable would die), and installed a couple of programs (including powertoys) and now once I press the AltGr key, the whole keyboard layout changes to something bizzare! Pressing a gives f, and most keys don't work. I am sure this is a known and solvable problem, but I couldn't find much on google. Any idea what to do? Any other information that I should give? Actually, there's no reason to quote header lines at all. Avoid this and you don't need to do anything else. > Subject: RE: broken install - font fixed > > > resend. Yeah, I think that's obvious given the headers you included above. > So i had cygwin installed on my system with Unix line endings. Did you know for sure that doing this was going to address a need you had? Are you willing to accept the consequences of installing this way? If not, I'd recommend wiping your installation again and reinstalling with UNIX line endings. Installing with DOS line endings is highly discouraged (the 'setup.exe' that will be used for the upcoming 1.7 version doesn't offer the option at all because it is such a bad idea for the uninformed user.) > installed version was downloaded > to a local directory from the xmissions site on a windows xp system. > http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/cygwin-x-faq.html#q-error-font-eof > > I tried the steps laid out in your faq. > > $ mount > C:\cygwin\bin on /usr/bin type system (textmode) > C:\cygwin\lib on /usr/lib type system (textmode) > C:\cygwin on / type system (textmode) > c: on /cygdrive/c type system (textmode, noumount) > p: on /cygdrive/p type system (textmode, noumount) > z: on /cygdrive/z type system (textmode, noumount) > > $ umount /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ > umount: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/: No such file or directory > > And then reinstalling the x11 packages from setup.exe. Actually, your reinstallation with DOS line endings has pretty much doomed the recommended process to failure. But it wasn't really needed anyway if you were wiping your installation and reinstalling. But then you chose DOS line endings... > I still get the same error. Any ideas? Yep. Try reinstalling from scratch with UNIX line endings. You won't need to fiddle around with the process described in FAQ entry then If you _absolutely_need_ DOS line endings for some files, mount a particular directory(s) as DOS afterwards. Don't remount the default mount entries though. You'll just get yourself back into a state that will bring you a world of hurt. -- Larry Hall http://www.rfk.com RFK Partners, Inc. Please give me a solution regarding this. > > Thanking you,in anticipation. > Yours faithfully, > Mallikarjun You haven't given us anywhere near enough information to let us work out what your problem is. What follows is a general procedure to follow to get X working. If you installed cygwin with DOS line endings, you would be better off cutting your losses and uninstall cygwin. Then start again using UNIX line endings. DOS line endings just cause more trouble than they are worth, and there is no good reason to use them. (The option is being removed from setup for cygwin 1.7) Next, read these links (even if X is now working): Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ If you still have a problem, check /tmp/XWin.log for errors. If you're still no wiser, try searching the mailing list archive: http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-xfree/ In particular, search the archives for references to any error messages you see in /tmp/XWin.log. If XWin aborted, the error message related to this will usually be near the end of the file, so it's best to work backwards through the file. You might be suffering from http://cygwin.com/acronyms/#BLODA If you have any of the software on the list, it's important to try uninstalling it. Just "disabling" it is unlikely to be enough to stop such badly written software from interfering. Finally, if you're still stuck, you need to follow the instructions here: > Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html In particular, *attach* the output from running "cygcheck -svr". For X related problems, you should also attach /tmp/XWin.log. But as soon as I press the first button on my keyboard the connection starts to react extremly slow. I takes about 10 seconds for keystrokes to appear. Therfore I try to explain it. And I hope that I explain my problem to the right mailing list. Perhaps someone had the same problem like me. I will attach cygcheck.out as well to this report. Now the description of the problem: ----------------------------------- After I have started Cygwin.bat from the desktop, I get a shell. If I invoke from this shell "xemacs &", I get an XEMACS-Frame, in which I can use all my macros and key bindings I have defined in my "init.el". Even if I have swiss keyboard, it works perfectly. But when I start "startxwin.bat" I get a shell called: "Cygwin/X X" If I invoke again xemacs from within this shell, I get an xemacs- frame. As soon as I click onto this frame, it is divided vertically. And I get the messages as below in the other window. ?? ---------------------------------------------------- ?? (1) (xim-xlib/warning) Can't even set locale to `C'! ?? (2) (xim-xlib/warning) Can't set locale. ?? Using C locale instead. ? ?---------------------------------------------------- After that, if I open a file to edit, it seems to be that I have now US-Keyboard, because my "Z" and "Y" have changed their places. From someone I got the hint to use the following line in my "startxwin.bat" file to get rid of this problem for my swiss keyboard. ?? ---------------------------------------------------------------- ?? run XWin -multiwindow -clipboard -silent-dup-error -xkblayout ch ?? ---------------------------------------------------------------- With this method "Z" and "Y" have the right places again but the SHIFT key in XEMACS has no meaning more. For example I have of F1 the following commands: ? --------------------------------------???? ?????? F1? = shrink-window-horizontally ??? sh F1? = Revert-buffer ? Ctrl F1? = enlarge-window-horizontally ? --------------------------------------???? "F1" and "ctrl F1" work perfectly but "sh F1" not, as if it is not recognized, when I press the SHIFT key. Instead it shrinks the window Horizontally. On the "Cygwin/X X" shell I get the message: ???????? -------------------------------------------- ???????? $ Warning: Unable to load any usable fontset ???????? -------------------------------------------- as well. If I invoke the on this shell "xterm &" I will get a new xterm-shell but on the existing shell I get the following messages: ? -------------------------------------------------------------- ? $ Warning: locale not supported by C library, locale unchanged ? Warning: locale not supported by Xlib, locale set to C ? Warning: X locale modifiers not supported, using default ? Failed to open input method ? -------------------------------------------------------------- ?I will be very happy to get an answer to solve my problem Regards Mohsen -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... The solution (as I hope you have found by now) is in this section of the Cygwin/x FAQ: 3.7. I have a multihead system. Do I need special options to make it work? You should start XWin.exe with the -multiplemonitors options It was easier for me to debug this because I had Cygwin/X running, then configured a second monitor, then observed the white windows. If you're installing Cygwin from scratch, it's harder to find the feature of your system that caused the failure. I think the FAQ entry should be rewritten to start with the symptom instead of the cause, something like this: 3.7. Why are my X-application windows white? You probably have a multihead system. You should start XWin.exe with the -multiplemonitors option. I note that the documentation for the XWin.exe command line parameters at http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ug/configure-cygwin-x-options.html spells the option as "-multimonitors", but the program's compiled-in help only shows the longer form.
