Tunneling does not seem to work here (newbie)?

There's your problem. You should set it before running "ssh -Y". For
example try either
export DISPLAY=:0.0; ssh -Y username@boxname
DISPLAY=:0.0 ssh -Y username@boxname
-- both should work.
