The MATE Desktop Environment is the continuation of GNOME 2. It provides
an intuitive and attractive desktop environment using traditional
metaphors for Linux and other Unix-like operating systems.
To run the MATE desktop, install the mate-session-manager package and
its dependencies, and either use the provided Start Menu shortcut, or:
echo "/usr/bin/dbus-launch mate-session" > $HOME/.xinitrc
and run 'startx' from the Cygwin prompt to launch.
This is an update to the latest upstream bugfixes for 1.8. Please note
that mate-terminal requires xorg-server 1.16.2-1 or newer to work in
XWin -multiwindow mode.
