Uh, 15 years ago maybe.  Many's the time I've started with a shell 
script happily, then evolved it over time until it had to be rewritten 
in Perl.  Each tool in its place.

Even if we accept that there's nothing you can do in Perl that you can't 
do in an amalgam of sed/perl/sh, it's a pretty silly argument.  bc is 
Turing-complete, too, so why don't we just write everything in that?

Syntax matters.
