trouble with bash / if in recent release / update ?

Here's a thought...

1. Collect "a few" (the more, the better) e-mails on this topic and 
leave them sitting around your computer somewhere.

2. Next time someone asks this question, just send all the relevant 
mails to the querent. Preferably as many individual e-mails. :-) 
Optional: write a program to automate this.
