Well, of course, all the unpunched columns in the card *are* spaces, so 
by definition, punched cards are space-padded. Unless you had 
variable-length cards :-).

PS Real programmers can (could? by definition?) read punched cards by 
holding them up to the light. Oh, and at normal (human) reading speeds, too.
