I dunno.

I guess we do need to do something now that a: is no longer unique.  On
the cgf-dev branch, I use symlinks like :foo: to indicate device nodes which,
argh, now are problematic.

The problem with using anything like ${foo} or, now, :foo: is that those
are valid filenames.
