uncaught exceptions in setup

I've worked my way through a bunch of these before giving up.  It's
particularly annoying to get the message for tarballs that are now
[prev] when I have [curr] installed.

Since the tarballs are in fact intact, I'm suspecting that updating
of existing files has been a common practice.
