In fact, you don't need to stick to http://ftp.gnome.org, which is very slow. 
There's a lot of gnome mirrors,  the list could be found from:
  http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/gnome/MIRRORS.html
The big problem seems to be there isn't an obvious link from the webpages of gnome.org.
