The jpeg package has been updated to version 6b-4. The jpeg package
contains the Independent JPEG Group's libjpeg library and various
utility programs for manipulating jpeg files and images.
- you can now use -DALL_STATIC as an alias for -DJPEG_STATIC
- fix typo in jmorecfg.h
- README points to simplesystems.org instead of wizards.com (wizards
were scared off hosting libtiff because of UNISYS patent issues, so they
stopped mirroring ANY graphics libs).
To update your installation, click on the "Install Cygwin now" link on
the http://www.cygwin.com/ web page. This downloads setup.exe
to your system.
Run setup and answer all of the questions. Note that you can
no longer download directly from sources.redhat.com; use a
mirror. The mirrors below have the latest version of this
The setup.exe program will figure out what needs to be updated on your
system and should install the less package automatically.
If you have questions or comments, please send them to the Cygwin
mailing list at: firstname.lastname@example.org . I would appreciate if you
would use this mailing list rather than emailing me directly. This
includes ideas and comments about the setup utility or Cygwin general.
If you want to make a point or ask a question the Cygwin mailing list is
the appropriate place.
*** CYGWIN-ANNOUNCE UNSUBSCRIBE INFO ***
If you want to unsubscribe to the cygwin-announce mailing list, look at
the "List-Unsubscribe: " tag in the email header of this message. Send
email to the address specified there. It will be in the format:
o Building the package from source requires gcc-2.95.2-2 and
binutils-20000722-1 or later
o The semi-official 'lossless jpeg' patch is included in this build, and
is distributed as part of the source archive (see below). The lossless
jpeg patch is NOT related to the not-yet-ratified JPEG2000
specification. JPEG2000 is NOT supported by this package.
o Includes several utilities for manipulating jpeg files. The binary
package includes dynamically linked versions of these utilities,
although the build process will make both dynamically and statically
o Abides by the cygwin package system standard:
- import-lib /usr/lib/libjpeg.dll.a
- static-lib /usr/lib/libjpeg.a
- stripped dll /usr/bin/cygjpeg6b.dll (**)
- cygwin-specific docs in /usr/doc/Cygwin/jpeg-6b.README
- generic docs in /usr/doc/jpeg-6b/*
(**) We use '6b' and not '6' as the version number because jpeg
changes its interface even between minor release (e.g. 6a was ABI
incompatible with 6b)
o A cygwin-specific README and PATCH are stored in the source archive,
under <top>/CYGWIN-PATCHES/*. The original ljpeg-6b.tar.gz (lossless
jpeg patch) is also stored under <top>/CYGWIN-PATCHES/*. Both patches
have already been applied to the archive itself. The cygwin-specific
README is also installed by the binary distribution as described above.
o If you are building a package that depends on libjpeg, and you wish to
link *statically*, define -DJPEG_STATIC to get the 'correct' #define's
in jpeg.h (& friends) when compiling the .o files in your package. Also,
use 'gcc -static' when linking your package.
o You can also use -DALL_STATIC as an alias for -DJPEG_STATIC. So far,
the following libs are supplied in both static and dynamic forms and
support the -DALL_STATIC macro as an alias for -D<pkgname>_STATIC:
ncurses readline zlib libpng xpm-nox jpeg
The following static/dynamic libraries do not (yet) support the
gdbm gettext tiff jbig
o No special -Ddefine options or link options are needed when building a
package that depends on libjpeg and you want to link dynamically
