Can't compile i686-nptl-linux-gnu with gcc 4.7.0 on Ubuntu 12.04

Bryan, thank you for your recommendations ... installing 'gawk', doing a distclean,  re-starting the SSH session (logoff/logon) and doing a fresh build did the trick.  

The process is now at Pass-2 core compiler phase.
