how can I know the best group to create a crosstoolchain?

hi,
I have just done a old version cross-toolchain,with gcc-2.95.3 and
linux-2.4.21,and success.
But when I first did it,there were many error because of the host
gcc.I search the mailing list and modify the gcc veriso by using
gcc-3.4 and all things success.
So the first question is:
I want to ask how can I know the best group to create a
crosstoolchain?many version of gcc and linux kernel do not match!
the second question is:
when we need the patch of gcc, glibc and linux kernel?which we need?
