Can't reproduce here either, with your own code snippet stored
in ess.c :
prompt> arm-unknown-linux-gnu-gcc -o ess ess.c

prompt> qemu-arm -L [...]/arm-unknown-linux-gnu/sys-root ./ess
Input float: -3.5
Input is: -3.500000
[...]
