It's often the case that the /bin/sh in Ubuntu points to /bin/dash which
is a POSIX-compliant shell, while glibc configure scripts expect to run
on a bash-compatible, non-POSIX-compliant shell, which dash is not.
Check where your /bin/sh points to. If it's dash, change it to point to bash.
Google for dozens explanations to it the correct way (something to do with
reconfiguring the shell).
If /bin/sh is already pointing to bash, then we'd need a little bit more
information, such as your log messages.
