What version is your "oldish" libtool? Can you please send the result of
"libtool --version" ?

Here's what I have:
autoconf 2.61
automake 1.10.1
libtool 1.5.26
and "It Works For Me" (TM) So I'm inclined to requiring a libtool at least
1.5.26.
