x86_64 and i686 cross-compile toolchain

Hi,
 I would like to be able cross-compile for either x86 (i686) or x86_64
architectures using a single cross-compile toolchain by using a flag
to the compiler (such as -march, etc.). The host is a i686 linux
machine.

 Is there a way to set this up? Does crosstool support it?
