Arrgghh... Your date does not support the '%N' field (nanoseconds).
I agree that nanosecond precision is a bit overkill, but there is no
field for milliseconds. I've a patch pending in my tree.
Also, the shell might choke on such big numbers.

On my Debian:
$ uname -o
GNU/Linux
$ uname --version

Seems I've got a lot of work to make it portable.
On the other hand, you're pushing the limits, Nikolaus! :-) That's a tough
