gcc 4.x for ppc440 build problem (3.4.x build fine)

Hi,
I cannot build gcc-4.x based toolchain for ppc440 using crosstools 0.42 or 0.43. Build fails with (log tail):

 Unknown cpu used with --with-cpu=440
 
 gcc-3.4.5-glibc-2.3.6 build fine without any problems. Problem is 100% reproducible on at least two PCs.
 
 any idea how can this be fixed?
