One existing Unix idiom is to force ordering by
prefixing decimal numbers to the patch filenames
(well, *different* numbers I mean!), however redolent
that be of BASIC's line numbers.

The "series file" instead is already implemented in the
PTX patches, which is one good reason to adopt it,
but has the danger of ending up with
patches present in the dir but not included in the series
file, which might be a desirable thing or might just be a
way of leaving a trap to drive someone mad every now
and then.

Or just set LANG=C full stop, yes. That might drive other
people mad when they get one order from ls and another
from crosstool but it shouldn't take them too long to figure
it out.
