ok, dumb question time -- does NPTL support not imply that i'm trying
to build with "threads"? just not "linuxthreads"? or have i totally
misunderstood this the whole time?

p.s. the goal is, of course, to determine the incantation to build
in support for NPTL but *not* linuxthreads.
