dang -- recent binutils causes "as, ld missing or too old"

  refresh my memory -- how does one deal with both "as" and "ld" being
perceived as:

configure: error:
*** These critical programs are missing or too old: as ld
*** Check the INSTALL file for required versions.

i used a recent snapshot of binutils (binutils-050502.tar.bz2), and
the executables generate the following output:

$ ./as --version
GNU assembler 050502 20050502
...

$ ./ld --version
GNU ld version 050502 20050502
...

  should i just bail and go back to a regular version of binutils?
