A little google searching for that error message finds one tip:

But perhaps you should consider using crosstool to build the
toolchain, if you're not already?
   http://kegel.com/crosstool/crosstool-0.29/buildlogs/
shows that it can build the combination
   arm gcc-3.4.2 glibc-2.3.3 binutils-2.15 linux-2.6.8
successfully, and that's nearly exactly what you wanted.
