I just ran into this myself. I'm pretty sure it's fixed in newer binutils.
I'm about to try binutils-2.14.92 for the first time, I bet that'll do.
BTW one of the things that's delaying the release of crosstool-0.28
is I'm trying to get most architectures building with gcc-3.4.0.
