how do i actually build and link agains my lovely crossbuild environment? :-)

That doesn't seem right... you shouldn't need to change your path. Hmm.

Maybe, but I dunno what at the moment.
I'll see if I can reproduce your problem, and help track it down, but I can't promise when.
