arm-elf-gcc 3.4.3 unnecessary large stack frames in _vfprintf_r

Using the mentioned gcc for building newlib 1.13.0 shows a bloated stack
frame in _vfprintf_r of about 1700 Bytes. Using gcc 3.2 to do the same thing
results in a stack frame of about 520 Bytes.

The 3.4.3 (binary for cygwin from gnuarm.org) looks like a bad choice for
low memory
and small stacks, though only this obvious for the '_vfprintf_r' newlib
function.

Does someone know how different versions of gcc behave for this ?
