gcc-3.3.3 glibc-2.3.2 binutils-2.15 and ptxdist busybox insmod

Seeing that Dan reported

 "E: gcc-3.3.3 glibc-2.3.2 binutils-2.15 linux-2.4.24" 

works with mipsel, I tried using a similar combination:

  gcc-3.3.3 glibc-2.3.2 binutils-2.15 linux-2.4.18

I also used ptxdist-testing-20031113.tar.gz to build my root
filesystem, including busybox, which gets used for insmod et al.

My problem was with module loading:

  # insmod mymod
  Using /lib/modules/path/to/mymod.o
  insmod: Unhandled relocation of type 7 for
  Warning: unhandled reloc 7
  insmod: Unhandled relocation of type 7 for
  Warning: unhandled reloc 7
  insmod: Unhandled relocation of type 7 for
  Warning: unhandled reloc 7

...etc for 20 or 30 lines.

I scanned google for hints but didn't find anything that made sense.
Could this have something to do with the binutils version not being
compatible with the busybox insmod in ptxdist?
