glibc "crypt" addon and 2.6 kernel?

  ok, it appears that i successfully built a powerpc toolchain from

	gcc-3.3.2
	glibc-2.3.2
	binutils-2.14.90.0.5
	linuxthreads-2.3.2

and that toolchain even seemed to compile the ubiquitous "hello,
world" programs, both statically and otherwise.  this is quite the
achievement since, really, i have no idea what i'm doing. :-)

  so, based on this, a couple of questions:

1) i'd like to add the "crypt" glibc addon to the mix and, as i 
   read it earlier, i need to patch the glibc source with the crypt
   tarball i downloaded, and add that entry to "enable-add-ons"
   when i build glibc?  is that all that should be necessary?  just
   thought i'd ask before investing a couple hours letting it run
   before realizing i did something silly.

2) what are the chances of building a 2.6-kernel powerpc toolchain?
   i have the CPU cycles to set it up and just let it go and see
   what happens.  is it worth the attempt?  or can someone tell me
   definitively that it's guaranteed to fail?
