importance of __linux__ flag

Hi people,

Can anyone tell me abt  the importance of __linux__  flag when making the 
cross complier.

I am trying to build a kernel image  for uCdimm on CYGWIN.... i removed the 
__linux__ flag from the CFLAGS when building the CROSS COMPILER GCC. ( in 
stage6 of script) because we did not have the definition of __getreent 
function.


I am concerned if this would have any effect on the making of kernel image 
later on
