Please help newbie building i386 crosscompiler from Sparc Linux

Hello,

I am trying to build an i386 cross tool chain from a Sparc machine running Redhat Linux 6.2. I followed the instructions in this FAQ:

with the following settings:

host=sparc64-unknown-linux-gnu
target=i386-pc-linux-gnu
prefix=/usr/local
i=$prefix/bin 

I was able to build the "binutils", but when I get the following message during the build process of gcc:

I suspect that there are other environment variables that I need to set, or some other options from the make/build invocation, but don't know which. Please help.
