Not quite.
Example.
Suppose your _one_ copy of the entire source tree lives in /home/foo/src.
Do the following:
cd /home/foo
mkdir build-x86
mkdir build-arm
cd build-x86
../src/configure --prefix /mumble --target <some-x86-target>
make
cd ../build-arm
../src/configure --prefix /mumble --target <some-arm-target>
make
i.e. you have one source tree and two build trees,
and both build trees are in separate directories from the source tree.
