ARM/Thumb 4-byte alignment problem

Hi,
With Thumb GCC 2.95 there was a compiler option to compact structures
but there appeared to be none to compact simple global variables.
(i.e. A global unsigned char would take up 4 bytes of RAM regardless.)
There appears to be no option in ARM/Thumb GCC 3.0 to prevent this
alignment either. Does anyone know if this "bug" has been
fixed or is planned to be fixed anytime soon?
Thanks,
Jeff
