Assembler doesnt understand comments

Hi,

When I am trying to assemble an .s file i get errors on almost every line
since there are a lot of comments that looks like: 

; Comment 

....they always start with the sign ;

Can i send an option to the assembler so it know what kind of symbol i use
when i write comments or can this be solved in another way?
