Illegal instruction

Well I figured out what was causing the interesting behaviour in 
malloc and atexit.  I was using a version of the libraries compiled
by the 2.8.1 compiler with the 2.95.2 compiler, which didn't seem 
to go over well.  Many thanks to Art for his help.
