I encountered a similar error recently building for mips-any-elf. It
occurs
when your compiler executes the wrong 'as' program; the stock version
does not
recognize the -G option. To solve the problem you must make sure your
cross
assembler is installed correctly, probably in
/usr/local/mips-mips-elf/bin.
If you configure binutils with --target=mips-mips-elf and
--prefix=/usr/local/mips-mips-elf
then 'make all install' (in the binutils directory) it should take care
of the
problem.
