Loosely phrased [the details aren't important]:
assert() calls fprintf, fprintf calls malloc, malloc calls sbrk.

sbrk is a function you have to write yourself.
See for example newlib-1.8.2/libgloss/mcore/sbrk.c.
An alternative is to roll your own assert() and avoid this.
