No error codes

I've compiled gcc 2.8.1 for host cygwin and target ppc-wrs-vxworks.
The problem I'm seeing is that ccppc isn't passing any error codes
back to make. That is, when a compile fails, make keeps going.
Has anyone else seen this problem ?
